The Magic Of Old Bush Vines

Left to their own devices, grape vines grow as scrambling vines from a thick, supporting central trunk.

Otherwise known as “bush vines”.

Usually you’ll find vineyards are either grown “bush vine” or trellised, which is the classic looking neat rows of vines with posts and roses at the end and wires supporting the vines weight and directing the growth.

You could think of trellising like espalier treatment of fruit trees. It changes the natural habit of growth in order to maximise fruit production and access.
